S02e21 gets personal yall! The episode opens with Mike sharing an opportunity for growth before he and Jay discuss processes in music since going solo and sober and Kanye’s latest musical offerings. They talk instruments, personas and why one might want one before Jay shares what rehab might teach him and trusting the process. They talk melancholy and then mental health and Jay’s process in addressing his before hitting Top of the Hour and answering some questions. Mike gives us some insight into what makes him sad, they talk things taking tolls, and Mike draws a pretty great analogy as to Jay’s reticence on social media. Jay hatches a bad plan for meeting girls in his building before sharing that he’s back with his lady oops and they workshop a podcast host to replace Akil. To close out they discuss Usher, Mike calls Jay out for being judgemental and they talk getting caught out there on twitter.

Episode 19, Rehabitation, kicks off with talk of the virtues of country living and then the virtues of escaping it when it’s trying to kill you. Mike and Jay talk actors-cum-musicians and vice versa, men’s accoutrements for anti-ageing and the double-standard when it comes to men and women getting older. They talk Dutch atrocities, whether Jay being an awful fisherman = failed masculinity and baseball cards before Top of the Hour kicks in and they get serious about R Kelly and personal issues. Jay gives us a lil rundown of what he’s got going on, they talk Boogie Cousin’s controversial decision and Mike brings in Marc Maron to support his disdain for kiddie culture. Mike and Jay get real-ish about addiction and what lies beneath, talk right-wing warriors, keeping sex stuff out of the studio and then just sex stuff. To close out, Mike makes the distinction between intelligence and education and gives sage advice regarding change. Laaaasers!

The Lasers kick off episode 3 by examining the idiosyncrasies of various police precincts before then eulogizing fallen Montreal music venues and discussing No Doubt’s catalogue. Jay and Mike agree that Timbaland would easily discard Swizz Beatz in a beat battle and Jay recalls a panic attack post edible & Flying Lotus performance. Mike shares his ambivalence come dislike for The Migos and explains the similarities between Portuguese and Romanian (it’s the ziou sound). The Lasers fashion police the Migos on SNL, talk dating Sarah the stripper, and finally determine why rap rock keeps missing the mark. They speak Weezer and then Weezer/Weezy mash-up! and then unfortunate sex endings. They cap it off by exploring the ultimate face-offs in rap and who’s Beatles, who’s Stones.

Merry Christmas from Lasers on the Ride!!! The episode kicks off with the introduction of a drinking game and discussions of good and bad presents of yesteryear. The gang discusses the tradition and each Laser’s respective plans for the holiday and then traumatic Christmas experiences from their youth. They broach the rules of secret santa and whether picking your own name and following through with a gift for yourself makes you a sociopath, in which case the Lasers are 2 for 4. They exchange gifts and KC’s mom videochats in and sings Little Drummer Boy for yall before KC drops a Christmas freestyle. They phone some friends to wish them a Merry Christmas and close the shit out with Eazy-E’s Christmas album.

Episode 45, Regression Session, kicks off with talk of glassware while KC hits a dance that you can’t see but you can feel. Mike takes a final stand against nostalgia and they discuss the phenomenon of adults consuming culture that was ultimately created for kids while Jay wonders whether Tom Selleck has twitter. Mike breaks down Canadian Thanksgiving, Jay gets more specific, and Mike celebrates vaginas for their strength and tenacity. Jay shares his crush on art girls and Mike helps him pick up before they discuss big Barry White’s sex appeal. They launch a beat battle sampling a famous Hendrix ditty and Akil tries his darndest to defend cartoons before Mike gives Transformers the business.

In s01e44 the Lasers welcome Karma Atchykah, rapper/music businessman from Montreal and representative for Fool’s Gold member Shash’U. He breaks down his current situation and what he’s got going on before the Lasers get into christmas mode and plan a secret santa. Jay hands out a few television treatments for Karma to flex upon and the crew talks buff kangaroos pre-viral-kangaroo-video.  Karma speaks on a few of his current projects and gives boss advice (quantity over quality my dude he says) and recalls some lame jobs. He speaks on his Haitian background and the group discusses the cultural usefulness of certain movies and themes. Akil wishes it were ‘92 while Karma shares his modern take on learning and the group discusses the dos, donts and beauty of shrooms consumption while Mike loves LSD. Jay gets too deep about the meaning of the podcast and Karma explains the origins of his name and his thoughts on karma as concept. Jay brainstorms an eggnog business, Akil can’t change won’t change, and Jay cheats on his ol’ mistress nostalgia.

In episode 38, MARKINGS & Art Things, the Lasers are joined by Markings from the Artbeat collective and the Piu Piu scene.  He speaks on his time as a rapper, meeting KNLO, and the beginnings of the Piu Piu movement and Artbeat. They discuss Akil’s long lost (tshirt) love, an awful poster from a county fair, and pick bottom 5 dead or alive. They dissect the idea of influence in art/music and play Which Diddy Did He do?, the Diddy ghostwriting game. French rap gets a talking to and true schoolers do too.  They play Ken vs Ryu and What Colour is Memph Bleek’s durag? – classics, and then talk the sad state of the Montreal scene in the mid and late aughts.  Markings discusses Guatemalan music of past and Mike finally finds a brother in arms against nostalgia. Mook Life gets a mention and Mike talks producers who can’t see the music for the sample. They play Fuck It! Pick a Record! and Markings talks stepping your goddamn game up, shoe or otherwise, if you want to goddamn get anywhere.

Episode 34 of Lasers on the Ride, Mr Wavvy Night In Fattal, kicks off with talk of the Cleveland Indians’ racist logo and Jay’s love for baseball. Mr. Wavvy, Montreal music/culture writer and Cult MTL contributor, joins the Lasers and they talk Kid Cudi and his influence and then predict who got next Cudi. Jay tells of his friend who sells dirty underpants to dirty dudes and Wavvy breaks down his current favorites from the city. They discuss Andre vs Big Boi, misogyny via Action Bronson, and Shaq’s #blessed music career. They turn top 5 on its head and pick bottom 5 and Mr Wavvy talks Spacejam but also talks why he talks Spacejam. Mike tests his theory that nostalgia rules everything around us and tells of when he met (ghost) Curtis Mayfield who gave him his blessing.

In episode 9 of Lasers on the Ride the guys discuss Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and then keep digging deeper into triangles and get real about the food pyramid. Akil wonders/worries whether he is a negative nancy on the internet but chalks it up to being a gemini. Mike and Jay overindulge and discuss “nature’s instruments” and Akil pushes Daredevil. The Lasers scheme on where to hide the stash. Mike besmirches Karen Civil’s name and Bobby Brown catches his first W in a long time and high praise from the Lasers.

In episode 7 of Lasers on the Ride the guys welcome back KC, whose rise to prominence was swift following episode 6.  First things first KC makes his own theme song and the Lasers establish their top 5 rap beats OF ALL TIME. Jay reveals his take on fudge/marry/kill and it’s pretty bleak stuff. KC drops a freestyle as a KC is wont to do and the world cheers. Donald Trump gets broached. Akil laughs HARD. Mike recounts a life changing event. Jay pushes the boundaries of the mile high club and KC recounts the summer he spent at the Jersey Shore house right before it became famous. To finish it off the Lasers talk baseball, the exploits of Ricky Henderson and whether Tim Raines was a jerk or not.

In episode 6 of Lasers on the Ride Akil goes full curmudgeon and the guys welcome extended member of the Lasers, fellow Montreal rapper and old friend KC.  First, Action Bronson producers are dissected and then pitted against one another (Akil gives Harry Fraud the business and Mike laughs). Next, the Lasers talk pubic hair and their respective preferences in that regard, with Akil taking a strong stand on the matter and then making a shocking reveal.  Mike and KC broach the oft-disputed topic of organized religion and then KC reveals the psalms of Ash Ra, which are bonkers crazy. The Lasers move on to lady noses and allegiances are claimed. Akil gets angry again, first at thirst-traps and then at jars. Mike goes deep into his childhood to touch on what everyone is dying to know, his thoughts on broken telephone, and finally Jay reveals his hangover regimen.

In this episode of Lasers on the Ride, the guys pontificate on Bob Barker’s particular brand of misogyny and then devise a plan to take over the game show industry. Mike shines when Jay raises Carmen Sandiego from the dead. Akil discovers that all new babies are treated like (baby) Jesus himself and then cautions against treating anyone like a monkey. The Lasers attempt to track down oft-forgotten early nineties icon Jamal from Ghost Writer, while Jay and Mike tackle the subject of hunting animals with the aid of drones and how nature can fight back (drone spirit!). Lastly a near-death Dave Brubeck leads the Lasers on a walk straight into the grave from either an elevator or just some good cookies.

In this episode, the dudes from Lasers on the Ride discuss a series of topics, ranging from what exactly constitutes a freestyle nowadays to Brampton Ontario to porn company office dynamics (no Jim and Pam here). The matter of prostitutes arises, more specifically whether a man who frequents a prostitute can do so of sane mind and whether a woman can choose to prostitute herself of free and healthy spirit. Mike attempts to lead Akil to feminism and you decide whether it worked (it didn’t). The topic of why one artist might not support another artist is broached and two theories emerge, along with a bottomless pit of 'nahmeans' into which we fall. Jay poses what Mike concludes to be the hardest, most probing question of all time, and the name Jeremy Roenick is defamed, as it should be.
