Moving forward Markings and Spook play Mike’s Hot Take Invitational (First Annual) where they hot take against one another while Mike arbitrates before they talk whether charisma is king in rap and hit Top of the Hour and answer some questions. The gang discusses the Montreal music scene, who’s popping out here and then the problems inherent to art in Quebec before Double P starts his self-portrait and gets deep about his content. Mike and PJPB recall an internet incident they once had over some of PJPB’s work, Markings spills tea about blocked opportunities for Montreal rap radio and Spook shares his major daily needs. The group discusses why Montreal rap struggles to find its place, how to come to terms with front facing camera usage and how they want to be remembered/eulogized before talking top humans on earth. To close out they talk spicy takes on Montreal music and the pursuit of happiness, really.

In s02e20 Mike is joined by Markings, rapper / Artbeat and Loop Sessions affiliate, as co-host as they welcome J.u.D., Montreal DJ / producer / graphic designer / radio host, to the podcast. Things kick off with talk of Rico Nasty and reversal of gender roles, modern dating and dating pros before Mike reveals that he cried all morning, J.u.D. reveals that he’s on a streak of a certain kind and Markings reveals his nightmare. The gang talks just being honest when pursuing sex and how to use lucid dreaming for bad and then top 3s in various mediums. They play Top of the Hour (!) and discuss energy drinks, dream beefs in the Montreal scene, the inner-workings and inner-bias of the local music industry and who gets a seat at the rap table. They talk homebodyness before Mike shits on art again and everyone bemoans quebec’s messed up relationship with black music. J.u.D. gives us some insight into the early days of Alaiz, a local music collective from a few years back, and they talk music distribution outlets, bring back “Fuck it Pick a Record!” from season 1 and then discuss the possible maybe probable re-emergence of the New York rap sound. They close out on maturity’s role in modern matrimony, what streams mean fr fr and what lies ahead for the internet before J.u.D. unveils his self-portrait for our collective enjoyment. They play a lil association game that is to games what peels are to bananas and then delve deeper into the drama surrounding Jay’s life. They explore pretty gnarly penis hole stories, Mike makes a bit of a personal revelation :0 and they pontificate on Madonna’s pp (private parts). They make light of Jay’s circumstances while Jay hopes he hasn’t overshared before they talk about the podcast’s direction and Jay’s options. Episode 12 of Lasers on the Ride welcomes founder of IX Daily, media personality and Montreal art scene staple Nick Brutus Grass to make jokes and discuss serious stuff. Conversation kicks off with talk of North vs South Carolina before the Lasers make Nick draw a self portrait and they get esoteric about art and life. Nick talks discovering new music and his passion for that stuff, ranks his best qualities and then breaks down some theories for the Lasers. They discuss emerging Canadian talent and the senseless attack levied against IX Daily before hitting “Top of the Hour” for some in-depth - trivia, is it? They play “Weird or Wavy” where they qualify increasingly bizarre things/concepts as either weird or wavy and Mike talks about his new fern while Jay makes a hose/hoes joke. They discuss ASMR videos and explore the pickle lady’s oeuvre and youtube therapy before Nick gives some insight into his career path thus far and his vision for his platform and self. To close out, they unveil Nick’s self-portrait and his space plans for the future. Lasers!

Episode 11 of season 2 welcomes dun dun dun duuunnnnnnh Son Raw, musical journalist / critic / observer to talk music and also nothing and also everything. The episode opens with the self-portrait game, where the guest is expected to draw himself and answer serious questions, before the gang discusses why certain people troll so hard, involuntary celibacy being bonkers, and making friends as adults. They talk music - who sucks with autotune, the problems with Drake, letting go of artists and tracking down Lord Have Mercy, before moving on to the myth(?) that making art is therapy. The group plays Top of the Hour where Jay get political-ish, Mike gets to finally discuss his zombie plan and Son Raw talks his feelings for various Daves. They talk favorite Source magazine ads, school, hallucinogens and drug stories before moving on to music, house and such, modern rap and how Son Raw got into grime. Episode 9 of season 2 welcomes the hosts of the Don’t Be Mad podcast, so it’s kind of like (podcast) squared. They start off by talking fraternities, where the Don’t Be Mad guys school the Lasers on university life, and the group picks sides on using coasters and Jay shares a sad(?) story that involves sex and christmas.  They discuss sexual proclivities, expanding personal horizons, and then the unfortunate turn of events that is Bill Cosby. The Lasers introduce a new game, Top of the Hour, where everyone picks a random question and gives their best reply and they explore real and imagined hurdles to beach resorts. The group breaks NDG down into parts and the Don’t Be Mad dudes share their hopes and dreams for their platform and teach the Lasers about anime. They close out by discussing cartoon sex, naturally.

Episode 6 introduces our first guest of season 2 - writer/podcast host/content creator Chris Masson from WatchMojo. They kick off the episode with a lil bit of the esoteric with Chris sharing stories from growing up with a mom who dabbles p heavily in the zodiac and contrasting that to other relationships in his life. The Lasers introduce a new season 2 game where they make the guest draw a self-portrait during an increasingly personal Q&A and Chris talks an ageing parent, going from art to art-ish, and which sin best applies. They talk personas in art and taking one’s self serious vs one’s art serious and whether REM, Live and Tragically Hip are the same band (Chris argues no, Mike is unfamiliar). They workshop some content ideas (Drakespeare vs Shakespeare comes out looking ok) and talk why men seek out wood in all forms, stylistic devices in writing and chip flavours. To close out, Chris performs a piece from his past just a little begrudgingly as per Jay’s request.

In episode 4 the Lasers enter the Danger Dome if danger was answering timed questions and the dome was a podcast. We find out each Laser’s take on important questions such as white people with dreadlocks, penis colour in porn, saucy vs dry-rub, dinner party etiquette, whether pumpkin pie is for old people, which colour wine is best, whether it’s ok that some rappers wear fake jewelry, sharing your bed with dogs and such and the relevance of the Junos. In and around the game, discussion proceeds at a normal, sometimes feverish, rarely sluggish pace. Jay recalls an awkward encounter between his arms and an older woman before the Lasers discuss comedians of yore-ish and dope film directors. Jay concludes that the History Channel targets racists and the Lasers discuss herstory and how much good stuff the world has missed out on due to misogyny (thanks for nothing misogyny!). Mike shares 70 through 61 on his best rappers of all time list and they examine why Canada is so good at indie rock and syphilis in the prairies.

Episode 49, Seasons Change Mad Things Rearrange, kicks off with talk of hootin and hollerin at women before the Lasers answer some questions. Jay steps out for a minute only to be replaced by super canadian Kenny McMaster who joins the Lasers in deciphering rap verses before Mike insults his daughter. They play a frankensteined fudge/marry/kill and Mike kicks Akil out of sremmlife. The gang discusses whether Guwop is a nerd (unlikely), what to expect when you’re expecting (technology advancements) and Tesla’s clairvoyance. They speak modern freestyling and stolen slang before determining who would win in a fight and Akil’s dating style. To close out, they throw some show ideas at the wall and decide which ones stick and give Led Zeppelin the business.

In episode 38, MARKINGS & Art Things, the Lasers are joined by Markings from the Artbeat collective and the Piu Piu scene.  He speaks on his time as a rapper, meeting KNLO, and the beginnings of the Piu Piu movement and Artbeat. They discuss Akil’s long lost (tshirt) love, an awful poster from a county fair, and pick bottom 5 dead or alive. They dissect the idea of influence in art/music and play Which Diddy Did He do?, the Diddy ghostwriting game. French rap gets a talking to and true schoolers do too.  They play Ken vs Ryu and What Colour is Memph Bleek’s durag? – classics, and then talk the sad state of the Montreal scene in the mid and late aughts.  Markings discusses Guatemalan music of past and Mike finally finds a brother in arms against nostalgia. Mook Life gets a mention and Mike talks producers who can’t see the music for the sample. They play Fuck It! Pick a Record! and Markings talks stepping your goddamn game up, shoe or otherwise, if you want to goddamn get anywhere.

Episode 36 of Lasers on the Ride, ERIN WILLETT’s Garden of  Eden, features Erin Willett, a brand developer/strategist and owner/founder of the Tap in Team. The episode kicks off with talk of the current work climate and where employment is headed and then how to brand masturbationfromhome as a hustle. They play Fuck it Pick a Record!, Erin talks why “artist” is a heavy ass title, takes us through her come up and explains why everyone should pick up what she’s throwing down. She coaches the Lasers through their brand and Jay coaches everyone through that coke life. The group explores Akil’s perceived negativity and tries to break it down into components and the studio’s bathroom catches an L but then a W. 808s and Heartbreak gets no love again despite Erin’s best attempts and the group picks guests for the dinner party of their dreams.

Episode 34 of Lasers on the Ride, Mr Wavvy Night In Fattal, kicks off with talk of the Cleveland Indians’ racist logo and Jay’s love for baseball. Mr. Wavvy, Montreal music/culture writer and Cult MTL contributor, joins the Lasers and they talk Kid Cudi and his influence and then predict who got next Cudi. Jay tells of his friend who sells dirty underpants to dirty dudes and Wavvy breaks down his current favorites from the city. They discuss Andre vs Big Boi, misogyny via Action Bronson, and Shaq’s #blessed music career. They turn top 5 on its head and pick bottom 5 and Mr Wavvy talks Spacejam but also talks why he talks Spacejam. Mike tests his theory that nostalgia rules everything around us and tells of when he met (ghost) Curtis Mayfield who gave him his blessing.

In Text Door Neighbour, episode 33 of Lasers on the Ride, the dudes kick stuff off by designing their own Barbies and talking doggy tinder (Air Bud we see you). Jay introduces a typecasting game he’s called “Do you have a little bit of him in you?”, they discuss winter coats and the Lasers meet their text door neighbours. They scheme on how to sneak into Reggae Fest, speak Jamaican event vs Jamaican event and then more generally life in the West Indies. Akil nearly muscle memories himself out of his job with porn and Jay over excels at gym class.

In episode 31 of Lasers on the Ride Montreal comedienne Mariam Khan joins the podcast. She and Mike talk about looking racially ambiguous before she details a trip to Boston but really South Boston but really World War B. Mariam shares her love for Big Brother, Mike schemes his submission video, and Jay misinterprets the premise. The group discusses whether they’ve fallen into oedipus/elektra complexes in their relationships, play Ken vs Ryu, and speak on Brandon Lee and Kanye. Mariam teaches Danish and Jay teaches Maritimes and the Lasers introduce Mariam to the chit chat championships. Dating rears its ugly head, Mariam chronicles an evening with a cheap son of a bitch and they play Fuck it! Pick a Record!

In episode 28 of Lasers on the Ride, Dirtwork’s Scene Tings, Montreal producer/manager/getitdone’r Dirtwork rolls through, bringing artist Treh LaMonte in tow. Dirtwork shares his background, speaks on his time spent in Atlanta and talks his come-up along side Montreal legend Bad News Browns and rapper/friend Magnum. The group discusses influences and influencers and preferences in this music shit. Kanye is broached and they disagree as to the replay value of 808s and Heartbreak. They pick least favorite Kanye songs, talk Kanye’s character, and discuss/laugh as to who would win in Eminem vs Drake. Mike and Dirtwork discuss chords and process in production and agree that Drake didn’t have no goddamn ghostwriters.  The gang discusses Montreal rap, the scene and its peoples, talks its politics and Dirtwork drops knowledge.   They pick worst hat game, talk tucked ears and dad hats, and play what colour is Memphis Bleek’s du-rag? To close out Treh LaMonte talks his first musical influences.

In Sarah Jay Switches Lanez, episode 26 of Lasers on the Ride, Sarah Jay, Associate Editor-in-Chief at Hip Hop Canada, joins the Lasers to talk rap music and make some jokes. The episode kicks off when Sarah blows minds with the reveal of Jewish Sesame Street and delivers some insight into the Orthodox Jewish community in Calgary. The group speaks vices, whether weed makes you lazy (100% of moms say yes), and fashion blogs. Sarah names names on some rappers (MGK stand up) and the group clears the air between Sarah and Akil. Politics in Rap (trademark) is broached, Canadian rappers are discussed and the group talks circumcision, with Akil and Mike taking strong stances for and against. The group talks favorite rappers, calls out some least favorites, and plays what colour is Memphis Bleek’s durag?

In episode 20 of Lasers on the Ride the Lasers welcome Montreal rap producer 80 Rock to the mezzanine. Conversation kicks off with talk of 80’s removal of the American flag from his much loved Polo garb collection and the gang briefly speak politics and chicken wing spots. 80 talks his production process and the crew discuss city birds vs suburb birds before Mike paints a vivid picture using latinos camping. Ken vs Ryu comes back around as does “fuck it, pick a record!” and the crew discusses the traps inherent to sampling reggae and then the intricacies of Russian funk. 80 Rock gives us some insight into his background and the dudes dive in and wade chest deep in 80s rock.  The conversation winds down with Mike calling The Game a 2 X bitch for getting a butterfly face tattoo and then changing it ‘pon getting clowned and finally rapper J Red stops by to discuss hot yoga.

On episode 18 of Lasers on the Ride, part 2/2 of the Meta4ce interview, the gang plays “forget it, pick a record!” and discusses the problems inherent to rap crews before attempting to establish the best one. Meta delves into the intricacies of the Christian Lebanese and tells stories of Karl Wolf’s tour rules and then of an old ass orgy involving 2 Live Crew sans Luke in Pointe Claire Village. As the conversation winds down, Meta gets inspirational and talks letting go and loving what you do and Jay introduces his new game “New England Patriot or famous polygamist?”

On episode 16 of Lasers on the Ride the guys are joined by rapper/battle rapper/producer Loe Pesci. First Akil and Loes discuss Leslie Jones/SNL/the Ghostbusters reboot before Loes speaks rather disparagingly on Mother Theresa. Jay attempts to live vicariously through Loes’ graffiti bombing past and Loes wonders if Lil’ Wayne is the most improved rapper of all time (he is, though alternates are provided). The whole crew wax nostalgic on No Limit Records. St Henri hero Louis Cyr is discussed though there is definite confusion as to who exactly he is. Akil and Loes discuss the joys and complexities of sampling. Mike shows everyone how Frank Ocean was foreshadowing in his rhymes and Loes gives his thoughts as to DJ Khaled and why he’s ultimately good for mankind. To close out, the gang find out the origins of the name “Hindu Kush”, Loes’ group with Sam Osa.

Buckle your seatbelts nerds because Akil and Shogun talk Batman vs Superman, Akil says “do you know your DC lore tho?” and the roof caves in (not really). Mike tells of his twitteractions with the president of Adult Swim who is actually its Creative Director and how they just can’t agree. More nerd stuff is broached, including South Park, Swingers, Scarlett Johansson, Power Rangers oh my. Jay loves bowling, Shogun drops a freestyle, and Ken vs Ryu rears its ugly head again.
